Hotel Bed and Headboard: A Design Guide for Hotel Rooms
The bed is the first thing a guest sees and the part of the room that works hardest. This guide covers headboard types, sizing, specification and the details that decide whether a bed still looks good after years of use.
A hotel headboard is not only a backrest. It protects the wall, can carry lights and sockets, sets the style of the room and has to survive daily cleaning. Decide the mattress size, the mounting type and the integrated parts first. The design and the material follow from them.
Headboard types
Three mounting types cover most hotel rooms.
Wall-mounted
Fixed to the wall. The floor under it stays clear for cleaning. The wall must carry the load.
Attached to the bed base
Moves with the bed and needs no drilling into the wall. Useful when the wall is thin or glass.
Full-width panel
A panel behind the bed that can also hold lamps, shelves and bedside tables. It covers more wall.
How to size the bed area
Work from the mattress outwards.
Start from the mattress
Mattress sizes differ by country and by brand. Confirm the exact size before drawing.
Set the headboard width
Decide whether it matches the base or runs wider than the bed. A wider panel can hold bedside tables inside it.
Set the height
Height depends on the pillow line, the lights, the sockets and the wall design.
Check the bedside zone
Leave space to reach lamps, switches and charging points from the bed.
Put it on the drawing
Write width, depth and height as separate dimensions so the quotation and the sample match.
What to write in the specification
Send these points with the request and the quotation will be accurate.
- Mattress size and bed base size
- Mounting method: wall, bed base or panel
- Surface: upholstery, veneer or laminate, with color
- Integrated lights, sockets or USB points, if any
- Cable route and where the cables leave the panel
- Edge and corner details
What goes wrong
Four common problems to plan against.
- Upholstery next to the pillows picks up marks. Choose a fabric that can be cleaned in service.
- Sockets behind the bed pull on cables. Plan the cable route and strain relief.
- A panel fixed tight to the wall makes dust cleaning hard. Leave a clean gap or use a sealed edge.
- Color differs between drawing and series. Approve a physical sample first.

Frequently asked questions
