IN SHORT

Design the desk from the staff side first: workstations, equipment, storage and cables. Then design the guest side: height, top material, lighting and branding. Check local accessibility rules for a lower section before the drawing is final.

1 · LAYOUT

Layout types

Choose the shape from the lobby plan and the number of staff.

01

Straight counter

Simple and clear. It suits narrow lobbies and a small team.

02

L-shaped or curved counter

It gives more work surface and guides guests toward the desk. It needs more floor area.

03

Mixed height

A standing section and a lower section in one desk. Check local accessibility rules for the lower part.

2 · STEPS

How to design it

Staff side first, then guest side.

Count workstations

How many staff work at the desk at the same time, at peak hours?

List the equipment

Computers, printers, key encoders, card machines and phones all need space and power.

Draw the staff side

Place storage, drawers and the cable route. Keep screens out of the guest view.

Design the guest side

Set the height, the top material, the lighting and the place for the hotel name.

Approve a sample

Check the top, the edge and the drawers on a real sample.

3 · REQUEST

What to put in the request

Send these with the lobby plan.

  • Lobby plan with the desk position
  • Number of workstations
  • Equipment list with sizes
  • Top material and edge detail
  • Storage and lockable drawer needs
  • Lighting and branding wishes
4 · WATCH

What to watch

Four problems that appear after opening.

  • Luggage hits the front of the desk. Choose a durable surface for the lower part.
  • Top edges chip with daily use. Check the edge detail.
  • Cables are visible or tangled. Plan holes and trays in the drawing.
  • Screens face the queue. Check the sight lines.
