Hotel Sleeper Sofas: Choosing a Sofa Bed for Guest Rooms and Suites
A sleeper sofa has two jobs: it must look like a sofa all day and work as a bed at night. This guide explains the main types, what to check before ordering and what to put in the request.
Choose the sleeper type from how the sofa will be used: an extra bed in a family room or a daily-use seat in a suite. Check the open size against the room, test the mechanism in a sample and ask for the fabric and safety details in writing.
Sleeper sofa types
Most hotel projects choose one of three.
Pull-out sofa bed
A mattress is stored inside the seat and unfolds forward. It gives a full bed but needs floor space in front.
Fold-down back
The back lowers to make a flat surface. It is quick to operate and takes less space, but the sleeping surface is simpler.
Daybed or chair bed
A single sleeping place that works as a seat in the day. Useful for a small extra bed in a suite.
How to specify a sleeper sofa
Five decisions, in this order.
Define the use
Is it an extra bed for children or adults, and how often will it be opened?
Fix the sleeping size
Write the open size of the sleeping surface and the mattress thickness.
Check the room
Measure the floor space needed when the sofa is open, with the door and the other furniture in place.
Choose the mechanism
Ask for the mechanism type. Housekeeping must be able to open and close it without effort.
Test a sample
Open and close the sample many times and sleep on it before series production.
What to put in the request
These points let us quote without guessing.
- Number of guests the sofa must sleep
- Open size and closed size, as width, depth and height
- Mattress type and thickness
- Fabric or leather, with color
- Fire and safety standard required in your country
- Floor space available when open
What to watch
Four problems that show up after opening day.
- The open sofa blocks the door or the path to the bathroom. Check the plan.
- A thin mattress is uncomfortable. Check the sleeping surface, not only the look.
- A heavy mechanism is hard for housekeeping. Test it as they will.
- Armrests and seat edges wear first. Choose a fabric that suits heavy use.

Frequently asked questions
It depends on the mattress and the mechanism. Ask for a sample and test it before series production. A pull-out gives a fuller bed but needs more floor space. A fold-down back is quicker and smaller. The room plan and the guest type decide. Send the drawing and the open size. We confirm the mechanism that can be built before we give the quotation. They depend on the country of the hotel.
